We are a multi-disciplinary group of students and instructors composed by the University of Sharjah (UOS), with the coordination of the Architectural Engineering Department, and the Research Centre Architettura>Energia of the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara, Italy (UNIFE), and comprising the consulting partners Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (SHUROOQ) and Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme (SZHP) that will assist with technical issues and sponsorship management and coordination.

The Solar Decathlon is an International student competition that challenges universities from around the World to design, build and operate a grid-connected, energetically self-sufficient house.

The competition was first launched in the USA in 2002, sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Solar Technologies Program, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NRE), BP Solar, The Home Depot, EDS (Electronic Data Systems) and the American Institute of Architects. In the past years, the successful American event was replicated in Europe, South America, and China.


In January 2016, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched the first edition of the Solar Decathlon international competition in the Middle East, to occur in 2018 in Dubai (UAE).

The goal of the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) 2018 is to contribute to the knowledge and dissemination of industrialized, solar and sustainable housing, but overall to increase the awareness in regards to energy efficiency and resource consumption.

The final stage of the competition will take place in Dubai, in fall 2018, when the 22 teams will assemble their houses, open to the general public, while being evaluated over 10 different contest concerning green building best practices:

Key members and third parties will cooperate in synergy to meet the SDME goals.The extended team is currently involved in research, design consultancy, projects, and training services for public administrations, companies, and privates, in the fields of energy efficiency and environmental quality of buildings and urban spaces. These activities include: accredited energy assessment; membership of GBC and LEED Scientific Committee; energy consultancy for architecture and engineering companies; research and application of BiPV.
